The Atlanta Series

Seems like Atlanta has grown in hot dog restaurants over the last few years, I realized this when I was looking thru Scoutmob (Atlanta exclusive deals site) for cheap lunch options. Hot dog based restaurants? I was confused and intrigued to find out more. The concept obviously makes sense for events and street vending but restaurants just for hot dogs was new to me. Luckily there was a half-off deal for HD1 to end my curiosity.
Pulling up to HD1 you almost think you’re in the wrong place because the exterior of the building looks contemporary. Huge wooden door for an entrance and the interior is modern and slightly dark with loud music. Is this a lounge? Oh no, it’s the right place. You order up front where the menu is located and the cashier can assist you through their variety.
I ordered the Garden Chili (veggie frank with veggie chili) and my husband had the Reuben’s hot dog, we both also ended up trying the HD Waffle Fries recommended by the cashier. The vegetarian hot dog was surprisingly good, the chili and the veggie frank had good flavors and a bite to them making it seem more meaty than it was. The Reuben’s hot dog tasted more like a normal hot dog but it was good quality nonetheless. HD Waffle Fries have a sweet aroma to them, the ‘maple-oy’ sauce is sprinkled generously all over. At first bite the fry tastes different and good, but after a few more of these fries you’re thinking can I have the regular? The sweetness of the sauce was over powering for us and we couldn’t finish our basket. Don’t get me wrong, the fries are really good but just a little too sweet for my liking. Maybe go light on the sauce or get it on the side?
Owned by a celebrity chef, Richard Blais, HD1 is definitely a unique dining experience. The chef has definitely come up with innovative menu options along with a trendy place to visit.
Verdict: Food and fries are worth trying at least once. Appeals to vegetarians as well.
Expense: Varies on what is ordered but is pricey for a hot dog joint.
